physics and caning

I have been spending the day with my books preparing for my exam next month. I don't expect to succeed so will be working hard to do so. Anyway, once I had finished I came to think about classical mechanics (you do if you lead a sad geeky life like mine!) And most importantly Newton's Laws of motion (it is said that Mr Newton was driven mad coming up with and defending these laws). Newton's second law states that Force = mass x acceleration. So, if I increase the accereration of my cane stroke then the force of the stroke applied will increase. Where the acceleration is radial, and is solved via a trigonometric function (bored yet? I am thinking you must be!!). So other than practising accuracy I must increase both my acceleration and the size of my swing to increase the force of my stroke. Now, I am off to practise Newton's fourth law of motion with my partner...

Or. Orrr. You could just yell "Geronimo" and let rip. Mind you, I never got this science business. And that E=MC squared business; don't even get me started.

Tom - loving it!!! Science can be over-rated anyway.

Happy to offer my sophisticated insights on a subject I know precisely nothing about. I do remember Physics and the joys of Fleming's Left, and Right Hand rules where the fingers on each hand were used to indicate, well, something. Naturally, my particular skill was making obscene gestures. And chemistry? Well, if you turned the pressure taps in the lab on just a little bit, you could direct a very fine jet of water at the back of the person in front of you. By the end of the lesson they had been gradually, but throughly soaked without noticing. Good luck with the viva and if you need any help...

To increase the force applied to your partners bottom with your cane, several complementary strategies to investigate:
- increase implement density to increase the object mass,
- increase the speed of the implements strike zone by using a longer cane,
- exploit the implements materials properties by transferring energy to the implement with the acceleration of the implement during the back-swing that will be released during the stroke
- the bodies pivot points in terms of torso rotation, shoulder, elbow & wrist and their relative timing will determine the maximum speed.
Using a hi-def camera, do some frame comparisons of implement acceleration but it’s the speed of the cane strike zone at point of impact that counts. I’d wager that in slow motion, your stroke is relatively consistent in acceleration whereas your partners accelerates just before impact employing considerable wrist strength that can, of course, support a heavier/longer implement.
Good luck with the exam prep... ;)

Paul A - sorry I did not make clear. I have already chosen my cane in my equation so the cane is a constant rather than a variable. Due to my wrists not being the strongest I will probably emply swing more to increase acceleraton. Follow through is something I am getting to grips with. Not sure I will ever be as hard as my partner consistently. I have met no one who is!!

a flick of the wrist in the style of a badminton shot will increase the sped of the cane when accompanied by a good swing !! The flick must be employed a fraction of a second prior to contact!

Check out the discussion between Mistress Switch and me on this thread:

http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/208047/2

Does that help?

(Sadly, It looks like Lucy's great little book is no longer available)

I've also got a delightful period non-con story written by phtographer Eva Adams (in German)around the physics of caning. Highly detailed and lingering discussions of increasing the efficiency of kinetic energy transfer by keeping the victim's muscles stretched and skin taught and gauging effectiveness via the volume of the audible response.

Redhead - the physics I have under my belt, but thank you! I am of course doing muchos practise and receiving advice from those around me, including Lucy Bailey herself.

Marqe - I mention acceleration in my post, which would naturally be increased by flicking the wrist instantaneously before the stoke is applied. Therefore this is already accounted for.

However, this is a difficult topic and I have only put certain aspects of it up on this post as it would be terribly long, and not too interesting after a while. It would be better fitted into a chapter in a book.

MarQe, I never played much badminton but in squash the same final wrist flick was used to impart significant extra power.

I've already admitted the physics is beyond me, so I really can't express this in scientific terms, but does the wrist flick introduce another variant as it utilises/maximises the flexibilty ("whippiness") of whichever cane is chosen?

In other words, the more flexible the chosen cane, the more potential for the flick making a speed difference.

(Apologies if I'm just restating what you said.)

This is a bit of a delurk for me, but I cant't resist asking whether there is any particular energy at which the cane would pass right through your body, appearing on the other side without your having appreciated the benefits at all?

Yes, but surely the relevent acceleration in this case is that reducing the speed of the cane at and after contact.
Once you've committed to a particular cane, the mass is fixed, and you control the force applied to accelerate the cane up to its terminal velocity.
The acceleration reducing the cane's velocity back to zero must be dependent on the force produced by the target, so reducing the target's movement as much as possible will minimise the time available for the load to be applied by the target to the cane.
Not at all suprisingly, therefore, it follows that the maximum load, acceleration, and pain, will result on taught muscles (Bend over, girl!) with the target unable to move forwards, i.e. up against the desk, bench, etc.
The next trick is to reduce the energy converted to sound, to maximize the energy converted to heat. But that would, sadly, mean missing out on the sound.

Great post algenon. Particularly the section covering the conservation of energy!

That you did not capitalise the Laws thus 'Newton's Second Laws' (and that you did not term him 'Sir'), suggests an incipient lack of full, female, regard for Male Power. I expect a thorough 'Fuck You', and I hope you do well in your examinations. Whilst we are at it, in some abstract frame of reference, I now believe Newton was in error in assuming covariance of Jewish and non-Jewish observation. Yet that relates to mitochondrial substantia and that is yours, distant of Goddess.

I am in error again, for there was only one Second Law. Always proofread what one writes. Have you noticed the wild asymmetry between funding for research on the sexual anterior of the human body and research on the sexual posterior of it? Has just one research paper on the physiological aspects of spanking ever been published, or written, in the history of the world? I am advised that spanking corresponds to a 'high-energy matrix' about which 'the spirits cluster'. Could life be any better? Stay well, do well, as I am sure that you shall.

Sabran-no you have me quite wrong. I have great respect for scientists such as Mr Newton. At the time their ideas were dangerous so bringing them to the forefront was, well, also dangerous! Like yourself it was a case of simple lack of proofreading as I am wishing to stay on the study as much as possible.

I was kidding, mostly. Yet I would, from my humble position, rather like to see a female leader in such metaphysics as is practised in words (Faery of Righteous Photons, in technical language). Polly Harvey is a leader only in aspects of music (Faery of Aggressive Photons and Tuneful Phonons). Thank you for using the term 'great respect'. Though I am not, perhaps, a direct relocalisation of Newton, the term does feel like a 'rubbing at a distance', another technical term abstracted from the environs of Quantum Theory. As for the physics of caning, I suggest that the dynamics can be reduced to linear equations only in much approximation: the thing undulates. I suspect that there is a relation between sexual flagellation and the notion of cosmic strings. They don't call The State of Israel a Near-Eastern dominatrix for nothing, you know. Now I return to my studies also.
